What is in a Business Plan

Writing a business plan is like planning a road trip.

Every fall at Tom Ferry Coaching we host webinars and devote time one on one with our clients to help them build out a solid plan for the next year.

Think of your business plan as the road map to get you to your destination. As coaches, we are your GPS. We guide you to get there on time, and take the right path. We help you make the adjustments you need if you hit any bumps in the road or unexpected changes along the route.

Think of a time when you planned a road trip with your family or friends. As you prepared for this trip, you had a list of things you did before you started your adventure:

  1. You imagined what it was going to be like when you reached your destination.

  2. You had a list of reasons why you wanted to go on this trip. You had a list of things you would do once you arrived.

  3. You created a packing list of what you needed to bring.

  4. You mapped out the route you would take to get there.

  5. You created a timeline of when you wanted to arrive, and you figured how much it was going to cost.

As well, this trip wasn’t going to begin for another few months, so you still had to stay focused on working right now. Creating your business plan is like that.

Before you set your goals and write your plan, grab a pen and a journal and write your answers to these questions:

  1. What’s the big picture of where I want to be 3 years from now?

  2. What are the 3 things I am absolutely going to accomplish in my business this year?

  3. What do I want for my health, wealth, and happiness this year?

  4. How much will all this cost?

  5. Who’s my ideal client?

  6. What do they need?

  7. How can I help them solve their problems better than my competition does?

  8. How do I attract more of my ideal clients?

  9. Where am I at right now and what do I need to add or remove?

  10. How am I going to set myself up to succeed?

This trip doesn’t start until Jan 1 but we block the time in the fall for planning, packing and preparation. With the destination plugged into your GPS and the route mapped out, it will be an amazing adventure.

Enjoy the journey.
