Start Your Day Doing This

What if you had the power to influence what you do every day?

When you introduce positive affirmations into your life, it helps you be a more positive person and strengthen your belief in yourself. What you say to yourself about yourself impacts your beliefs and actions. When repeated over and over, these behaviors determine our results.

Positive affirmations are “positive phrases or statements used to challenge negative or unhelpful thoughts,” shared Catherine Moore, Psychologist, MBA on positivepsychology.com. “Practicing positive affirmations can be extremely simple, and all you need to do is pick a phrase and repeat it to yourself.

The Science Behind Positive Affirmations

Positive affirmations require regular practice if you want to make long-lasting changes to the ways that you feel and think. One of the main psychological theories that support positive affirmations is self-affirmation theory (Steele, 1988). These experimental studies were based on the idea that we can maintain our sense of self-integrity by telling ourselves (also known as ‘affirming’) what we believe in positive ways. Self-integrity relates to our global self-efficacy which is our “perceived ability to control moral outcomes and respond flexibly when our self-concept is threatened (Cohen & Sherman, 2014).”

Choosing Your Affirmation

Are you ready to train your brain to overcome its negative bias? Fantastic. According to Thrive Global, here is how to do just that:

  1. Your affirmation starts with “I Am.” This because the affirmation is about you.

  2. Your affirmation is a statement of being (not becoming).

  3. Your affirmation is positive.

  4. Your affirmation is one sentence.

Some examples of positive affirmations:

  1. I am going to have a great day.

  2. I am smart and strong.

  3. I am always learning from my mistakes

  4. I am able to accomplish anything I set my mind to.

BUILD A SOLID START TO YOUR DAY

Create a collection of three to four affirmations and start the day by writing these powerful statements each morning in your journal. You have the power to be positive and to achieve your goals.
